Consumer electronics are electronic equipment intended for everyday use, most often in entertainment, communications and office productivity. In British English they are often called brown goods by producers and sellers.
The Consumer Electronics Association estimated the value of 2014 consumer electroncis sales in U.S. at US$ 208 billion.
Consumer electronics devices are getting smaller, and that leaves no room for traditional fasteners. More and more manufacturers are using adhesives technology that allows the bonding of different substrates and materials. These adhesives increasingly have to perform multiple functions.
Beside bonding and sealing, they are also employed to cushion components and insulate them against heat.
They can also reduce the stress that results from the differing expansion coefficients of materials.
The adhesives and sealants used in consumer electronic devices must be able to withstand both heat and cold, and the adhesives used in wearable devices must be non-toxic and able to tolerate exposure to chemicals such as those found in skin creams and sun-blocks.
Due to large production volumes of consumer electronics manufactures have to set up production lines with high output. This requires fast curing adhesives or curing during different reflow processes.
